How to Burp a Newborn Baby: Is it really necessary?
Il ruttino è considerato da tante genitori the main method of ensuring that the infant has digested feeding (perhaps also to avoid regurgitation or improve gastro-oesophageal reflux).
But is it really so?
È proprio indispensable to burp to the infant after drinking milk?
If the infant does not do it alone, how to help the newborn burp in your arms?
In this article I explain perché il ruttino non è così importante as much as ensure that the child does not suffer gastrointestinal disorders (regurgitation, reflux and/or colic).
The newborn baby's burp
Il ruttino del neonato consiste nell’belching of air from the mouth (burp) after feeding.
There are children who burp after each feedingothers who also do it at a distance, others who only do it sometimes and others who hardly ever do it at all.
Why?
La risposta è semplice.
Burping is often done when:
1. the child eats too quickly e swallow air (both at the breast and at the bottle when he drinks too fast);
2. when the newborn soffre di difficoltà digestive because of hiccups, regurgitations and/or gastroesophageal reflux.
Does the burp really help?

If the child has to do the ruttino perché ha mangiato troppo velocemente, il ruttino può servire.
È doveroso anche dire che il parent should pay attention ad alcune accortezze durante l’allattamento per migliorare la suzione e digestione del bambino.
Se il neonato è breastfed, try to migliorare l’attacco e la posizione del bambino to swallow less air and not swallow (vertical position?).
If bottle-fedis fundamental drinking slowly the infant, place it correctly (not hunched and squashed), use a appropriate teat (not too wide) and assess the type of infant formula (if he digests it well).

Burping and gastrointestinal problems
If the burp è associate a gastrointestinal disorders quali rigurgito, reflusso gastroesofageo e/o coliche gassose è fondamentale risolvere queste problematiche perché il burp is often sintomo di difficoltà digestive più ampie.
In questi casi, è fondamentale applicare tutte le accortezze che ho riassunto nel videocorso ‘'Treatment and prevention of gaseous colic and gastro-oesophageal reflux'’.
Infatti, il ruttino è la punta dell’iceberg of a problema più grande di difficoltà gastrointestinali caused by:
1. type of maternal nutrition (during pregnancy and lactation),
2. microbiota maternal,
3. gastrointestinal tension (palpable and can be improved with massage),
4. supplements food,
5. possible type of lartificial atte, bottle and teatetc.
6. other parameters.

How can you tell if you need to burp?
If you realise that your newborn baby swallows air while drinking milk, especially if he or she eats very quickly at the breast or bottle, he or she may be more likely to need to burp.
Il ruttino può essere fatto alla fine della poppata, per espellere l’aria ingurgitata durante il pasto, ma può essere utile farlo anche a metà poppataespecially when you realise it is swallowing air.
Another way to capire se il neonato ha bisogno di fare il ruttino è notare seDuring feeding, the baby begins to detach itself from the breast, arching its neck and back, or frantically turning its little head from side to side, refusing milk.
In such cases, burp him, but tenete conto che può soffrire di disturbi gastrointestinali (reflux o gaseous colic) to be resolved.
How to help baby burp
When the baby finishes feeding, I advise you to pick up your baby and place it chest to chest.
Non ti consiglio di tenerlo in braccio seduto in avanti per evitare un torcicollo ed evitare che si ”ingobbisca”.
In the video below I show you how to hold a baby (a position that is also good for helping him burp).
Another useful trick to help your baby burp (when needed) is to keep him well in do not beat with our hand on the back.
It has no function and effectiveness, on the contrary; sometimes it risks disturbing the child and get him high most.

An additional caution I want to suggest is not to place your baby sitting on your lap to help him burp.
In this position, the baby's back is hunched and the stomach (anteriorly) is squashed; as a result, we do not help the baby burp, quite the opposite.

Ricordati sempre che non è importante se il tuo bimbo fa o meno il ruttino a fine poppata.
E’ importante che stia bene e non soffra di disturbi gastrointestinali.
If you realise that he struggles to digest, cries often, burps a lot, has frequent hiccups and regurgitates frequently, I strongly recommend you watch the course ‘'Treatment and prevention of gaseous colic and gastro-oesophageal reflux'’ .
