1. Introduction to Infant Regurgitation
The infant regurgitation è una delle problematiche più comuni nei bambini di 0-3/4 months of age. Oftenmay be associato a irritabilità, pianto, difficoltà digestive e gaseous colic of the newborn child.
Probably no one has ever told you that regurgitation (also called infant gastro-oesophageal reflux) può essere prejudiced sin dalla gravidanza (sì, hai capito bene) o effectively treated nei primi mesi di vita (leggi fino alla fine dell’articolo per i rimedi).
Since in most cases infant regurgitation does not create (fortunately) growth problemsalthough the child may also be very annoyedreflux viene definito ‘’fisiologico’’.
However, there are several precautions that the parent needs to know to improve infant regurgitation.
Don't resign yourself to the old (and false) phrase: ‘’ è normale che il bambino rigurgiti o abbia reflusso (a causa della fateful immaturity of the cardia’’), passerà da solo col tempo’’.
You can help your child a lot.
In questo articolo e nel videocorso ‘’Treatment and prevention of gaseous colic and gastro-oesophageal reflux'’ ti spiego come fare.
2. Rigurgito del neonato: cos’è e come valutarlo

The regurgitation of the newborn child, often also referred to as physiological gastro-oesophageal reflux (i.e. that, in spite of everything, the child grows), consists in the upflow of milk from the stomach into the oesophagus resulting in vomiting.
Il rigurgito del neonato può essere more or less frequent tra una poppata e l’altra (es: 1-3 volte tra le poppate, oppure 1-2 volte al giorno) e può be more or less abundant in terms of quantity of regurgitated milk.
Inoltre, per valutare il rigurgito del neonato è importante prendere in considerazione anche how this issue negatively affects the child, creating digestive difficulties, discomfort and crying.
This means that the stomach (e più in generale il sistema gastrointestinale) del bambino è irritato e crea dolore più o meno marcato.
3. Regurgitation of the newborn: real causes

La MAIN CAUSE of infant regurgitation that it is customary to allege is the famigerata ‘’immaturità del cardias’’, i.e. that valve that closes the stomach at the top and should not allow milk to flow back up into the oesophagus and then the mouth.
In altre parole, viene detto al genitore che non si può far nulla poter risolvere il rigurgito e il fastidio del bambino…
But is it really so?
E’ davvero questa la causa di rigurgiti?
The answer is NO, far from it.
Le causes of irritation in the child's stomach, causes regurgitation, hiccups and digestive difficulties are quite different.
Le causes of regurgitation and gastro-oesophageal reflux are to be found in the type of maternal nutrition (during pregnancy and lactation), microbiota maternal, gastrointestinal tension (palpable and can be improved with massage), supplements food, possible type of lartificial atte, bottle and teatetc.
4. Regurgitation of the newborn: cures and remedies
Dopo esser giunti fin qui avrai capito che i più conosciuti current remedies for infant regurgitation (often pharmacological) do not take into account the real causes per cui si è creato.
Parameters to be improved
I remedies for the regurgitation and the reflux gastro-oesophageal infant are:
- If the child is breastfed, it is essential to investigate and improve thematernal nutrition;
- If the child is artificially breastfed one has to consider how the milk is offered, the type of bottle and much more.
- One must always assess the mobility of the thoracic diaphragm (located just above the stomach) and the pelvic one, which play an important role in gastric emptying and intestinal peristalsis. Indeed, very often there are severe limitations in children suffering from reflux caused by intrauterine malposition or difficult birth;
- The presence of objective tension of the gastric smooth muscle that create pain in the child. This can be noticed by palpating the child's abdomen at the stomach and assessing the visceral and ligamentous tensions.

- The presence of any intestinal smooth muscle tension which could slow down the transit and encourage milk to stagnate in the stomach and rise. Remember, it is imperative to improve intestinal transit to promote gastric emptying because the gastro-intestinal system is a single tube.
- The presence of neck and back contractures that might annoy the child and make him irritable.
Many children with reflux and regurgitation tend to arching posteriorly with the back, but it is not reflux. In fact, the baby makes this movement because of contractures in the back which, in conjunction with gastric pain, manifest themselves overtly.
The proof of what I am saying is that very often these children also tend to arch during the day or during sleep at night, positioning oneself on the side or turning the head sideways to 90 degrees. The consequence of this incorrect positioning is positional dolichocephaly.
- Many other parameters you will find in the video course ''Treatment and prevention of gaseous colic and gastro-oesophageal reflux''.
5. Infant regurgitation and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease: when to worry?
For example, in some cases, reflux is extremely resistant and is associated with severe difficulties such as weight loss, inconsolable crying, refusal of food, jet vomiting or vomiting with traces of blood.
In these cases, reflux may have underlying pathological conditions that require further investigation and specific treatment (e.g. pyloric stenosis).
When reflux is particularly persistent and not responsive to classic infant treatment, one tends to speak of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
In any case, the diagnosis of reflux (GER) and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a paediatric competence and that of the paediatric gastroenterologist.
